Before I get to the good stuff, Happy New Year! Although I am not exactly sure what to expect this year, I am excited and ready to conquer whatever 2021 has in store. 2020 be gone!
It’s a new year and I know a lot of people who have started new jobs this year. If that’s you, congratulations on your new role and journey! Now, whether you’ve started a new role, you’ve just accepted an offer, or you are in the job searching process, it’s good to be prepared and confident in order to succeed in your new role. Here are a few things to help you be confident and succeed in your new role.
1. Listen, observe and ask questions. Always be willing to learn. Starting a new role is a major transition and there will be a lot to learn. The best way to learn the ins and outs of a company is to listen, observe and take note of what you observe. Take the first couple of days to listen and observe to get a better understanding of the company culture and structure, who’s who, how the company is organized and operates, how your team collaborates, company challenges, and anything else that can help you succeed in your role. Do as much research as you can and when you don’t know the answer to something, ask questions. There are no such things as stupid questions in a new role, so fire off all of your questions!
2. Make a good impression. Go into your new role with your best self. First impressions are typically lasting impressions. I understand we all have days when we aren’t feeling it, but really try to bring your best self in your new role. I’m sure your team and leaders are expecting you to live up to their decision of choosing you and entering into a new role is one of the best times to shine your light and show them your best self. I don’t want this to sound negative, but the people you meet will make assumptions of you, how you work, how you will potentially collaborate with others, and if they feel comfortable enough to work with you, the first time they meet you. Make a good impression by entering your new role with your best self.
3. Show them what you got! One of the most difficult things about job searching, in my opinion, is knowing that you are qualified for certain roles, but having to prove to employers that you are qualified for those roles. Once you receive an offer to begin a new role, that’s your chance to prove to them that they made the best choice in hiring you. Show them what you got! Enter into your new role prepared, with confidence and eager to contribute. You were chosen for the job because you are qualified and because you are the best fit, so make sure you uphold that. Make sure your work backs up everything you said in the interview and more. Make them proud to have you and scared to lose you.
